PCMC Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Centre

Client: IHH Healthcare
Location: Prince Court Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur
Project: Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Centre
Description: 9,000 sq ft outpatient clinic
Our role: Lead designer, space planning

Rooted in the belief that nature is fundamental to the healing process, the design of this 9,000 sq ft outpatient Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre for Prince Court Medical Centre reimagines healthcare architecture through a restorative lens. As one of Malaysia’s premier medical centres, the space is conceived not merely as a treatment facility, but as a sanctuary, one that actively supports both patients and staff in moments of vulnerability, recovery, and renewal. The design centres on the elemental presence of water, a timeless symbol of serenity, movement, and healing.

Evoking calmness, zen, and safety, water serves as both concept and material influence, shaping the way users experience and navigate the space. Beyond aesthetics, water holds deeper associations with buoyancy and fluidity, qualities essential to orthopaedic care and physical rehabilitation. Embracing the philosophy of Healing Architecture, the space translates water’s therapeutic essence into a built environment that soothes, uplifts, and supports. Curved forms, flowing spatial sequences, and organic transitions encourage natural movement while reinforcing a sense of continuity and calm. Fluted and translucent textures echo water’s surface, softening visual boundaries and diffusing light to create gentle, welcoming interiors. This sensory approach where materiality and form work in harmony, promotes emotional and physical ease. Visual cues and shapes are layered into the design to reduce anxiety, encourage mindfulness, and foster an atmosphere of trust. Patients come to be treated but are also reassured by the warmth, softness, and approachability of the space.

This medical centre represents a shift in healthcare environments: from sterile and clinical to intentionally restorative. It is a place where design becomes an active agent in the healing journey, providing not just function and treatment but comfort and transformation. Through this project, the orthopaedic care experience is reframed as a crafted space where interior and nature work as one, creating an environment that heals by design.
