A unique transformative space where function meets form in a compact 713 sq ft home.
Practical planning, maximising efficiency and offering flexible solutions were paramount, ensuring that room sizes and user needs were not compromised, despite the compact floorplan.
Work, rest and play were the design team’s main focuses as well as the ever changing nature of students lifestyles in a single day. Through the use of custom designed furniture with the ability to transform, both units are truly adaptable spaces with a multitude of uses. Exploration of mechanisms and extensive research were integral to executing the ideas towards creating functional and enjoyable spaces.
The adaptive aspect of modern living inspires all elements; generous storage throughout, a walk in wardrobe, full size working space, lounge area and guest powder room. Areas perform dual functions through the use of easy to move furniture such as a foldaway desk and retractable meeting or dining table.
Carefully placed panels and a moveable shelving unit create seamless transitions, transforming the layout from work to rest and play thus enabling a variety of possibilities.
Fold down beds are integrated into this unit with a sliding door between the dining and living room to separate both spaces.
Three main layout modes include:
Day offers the choice of spacious living room, study or meeting area. When pulled out, the sliding unit allows a group of four to study together. This storage unit also cleverly conceals the single fold away bed behind it.
Entertainment introduces a social dining space through the use of the convertible kitchen counter. The unique slide and fold dining table is inconspicuously incorporated into the island counter, providing the option to seat up to six guests when required. Foldaway chairs stack neatly into the counter slots, keeping spaces tidy when not in use.
Night allows for a pull down double bed in the master bedroom, and single bed in the study, suitable for overnight guests and switches day work mode to evening relaxation.
